Our story

2003

When Sára was nine years old she became sick and had to be in a hospital for a year. This experience changed her life forever. She felt very lucky because her loved-ones always surrounded and supported her, but she knew that this couldn’t be said for every other child.

2014

The idea for Amigos was formulated by her ten years after this experience. She knew that she wanted to help sick children, like herself, in their recovery journey. She gathered 10 of her friends and started brainstorming, talking and planning about what Amigos could become.

After a meticulous planning and organizing process, 11 of us began to visit the Tűzoltó Street no. II. Pediatric Clinic.. The plan was simple: to learn, to play and to befriend- this is how we got our name, as Amigos means friend. A good friend can oftentimes serve as a connecting link between the unfamiliar and gray environment of hospitals and the outside world. With the help of games and laughter, it is much easier to overcome hardships. Because of the amount of positive feedback we received, we got more and more requests, thus our team grew to 16 people.

2016

2016 was a huge milestone in our story, because as we became a foundation, more and more people started joining our cause. By the end of the year, we were able to be there for the kids of Szent László Hospital and no. I. Pediatric Clinic throughout their time in the facilities. In order to be able to develop and grow as volunteers, we started the Amigos School, Amigo Inaugurations and other exciting events.

Our goal is to one day have an Amigo next to every sick child. In 2017 we got one step closer to achieving this goal as we got the opportunity to start visiting the Ilka Street Bethesda Pediatric Hospital. This allowed us to help by bringing happiness and learning to kids here too. Two enthusiastic Amigos began their work as official employees of the Foundation, ensuring development in this area too.

2018

After months of preparation, the first countryside Team was born inSzeged. There were now 94 Amigos dedicating themselves to bringing smiles onto children’s faces. Thanks to this, we were able to visit hospitals over 1000 times during this year.

2020

In spite of the unexpected circumstances presented to everyone this year, we were able to grow and evolve in the same way as we have always done: together, as a team. We began the year with 170 volunteers taking in person visits to hospitals, and continued toward the end of the year with 4 online programs. In our Mentor Program, we used TanulTablets (educative tablets) to help kids in disadvantaged circumstances by delivering personalized mentoring sessions; in the Online At Home programs, we held one on one tutoring sessions for children recovering at home in their chosen subject; and in Amigos Mini monthly, small group sessions on varying topics were held to continue growing and developing certain skills of the participating kids. The staff of Amigos also grew and there were now 6 staffer Amigos working towards the betterment of the foundation. In our first toy gifting project, we had the opportunity to surprise more than 4000 children.

In 2021 we continued our online sessions, held admissions again and as soon as we could, we rejoined in person hospital visits too. We published the first of our Amigos workbooks- such as the Mission Booklet and Amigos Language Kaleidoscope. After a long preparatory process we were able to start the long awaited Pécs Amigos team in the hospital’s Oncology Department. As our online sessions proceeded, we created Amigos Kalandor, in which we explored the culture, gastronomy and language of five different countries with the children. In Budapest, we joined the vaccination efforts and were able to begin our visits in the Országos Mentális Ideggyógyászati és Idegsebészeti Intézet’s Pediatric wing. Number of Amigos staffers grew to 8. In collaboration with more than 40 health facilities, we sent 12 000 children toys on Christmas and World Children’s Day.
